MnRA members and non-members send individual contributions to the PAC to become more directly involved in influencing the political process.
What is the purpose of the PAC?
The purpose of the PAC is to help elect candidates that support the Retail industry and share free-market ideals. PAC funds also help retailers speak to lawmakers with a strong unified voice by educating incumbents and first-time candidates about retail priorities and positions during election cycles.
Why do retail businesses care about who is elected?
Elected officials who recognize the importance of the retail sector and understand our policy positions, they often act on behalf of the industry by introducing legislation and working to pass laws that benefit your business.
An investment in the PAC through a personal contribution is often an investment in your livelihood.
In what ways do PAC funds protect the retail industry?
The contributions raised from individuals are given to candidates and party units who demonstrate a willingness to work in collaboration with the business community to support retail initiatives. Each legislative session, the Minnesota Retailers Association is able to work with our elected officials as a resource to reinforce session priorities and act as the face and voice of retail at the capitol.
Who receives the PAC funds?
PAC funds are strategically sent to pro-retail candidates and incumbents who run for state office in MN. This includes both legislative bodies and the Governor.
How does the PAC decide what candidate or political party to contribute to?
Contributions are given to candidates or elected officials who are pro-retail without regard to partisanship. For example, a contribution may be given to those who have sponsored or authored legislation on behalf of the retail industry or elected officials who made difficult votes in favor of retail initiatives.
Are there limits to how much a person can contribute?
There are no limits to the amount an individual may contribute to the PAC. However, the PAC is limited in how much they can give in support of a candidate under regulations set forth by the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board.
